    • Bathhouses are back!
.
"I’m floating in a communal pool that’s heated to a balmy 34C and I couldn’t give a stuff about anything ..."
.
My story on communal bathing was published in The Guardian Australia over the long weekend. Thanks to those who spoke to me about their experiences and research.

    • 'Not to risk loving is the greatest risk of all.'
.
The Gold Coast definitely isn't short on Asian restaurants. From sushi and sashimi through to dumplings and dim sum, there are plenty of places to indulge. So amid all this, it was an extra-special thrill to discover the visual and gastronomic wonderland (with side orders of fun, irreverence and attitude) that is Maggie Choo.
.
This street-facing, cherry blossom-laden, purple neon-blinking Broadbeach diner bills itself as a spot serving up 'kick ass Asian fusion' and, to be honest, it's hard to come up with a better descriptor than that. Our aburi scallops came topped with sambal butter and the crispiest, zingiest shallots; prawn and crab dumplings were accompanied by abalone sauce and a spritz of chilli oil and Maggie's XO fried rice absolutely knocked it out of the park and spoiled me for fried rice forever.
.
I also loved my Kitty Luck cocktail, a heady blend of gin, elderflower and apple liqueurs, lime, umeshu, lemonade and lychee juice. Poured from a teapot at the table, this drink is fetchingly served with a fortune cookie (containing the message above) on the side.
.
Have you visited Maggie Choo yet?

    • Whipbirds call as we stalk through the Atherton Tablelands rainforest in search of a secret swimming hole. Bamboo canes in hand to thwart the attentions of any curious cassowaries, we clamber up slopes, duck under branches and dodge the hooks of wait-a-while vine ...
.
My account of last year's adventure 80 kilometres inland from Cairns appeared in this month's The Road Ahead magazine, published by @racqofficial. Thanks to its volcanic soils, subtropical temperatures and abundant rainfall, the Atherton Tablelands is one of Australia's prime growing regions. It's positively brimming with coffee, tea, cocoa beans, bananas, avocados, strawberries, citrus and all manner of native and tropical fruits. From a native fruit farm producing chutneys and curry pastes through to a biodynamic dairy churning out award-winning cheese, yoghurt and gelato, and then onto Australia's largest tea plantation and several tropical fruit wineries, it's entirely possible to eat and drink your way through this delicious destination!
.
Top tips: bring an Esky and come prepared to loosen the notches on your belt.
.
My favourite tropical fruit has to be papaya. What's yours?

    • Greetings from the Gold Coast, where a swimming pool, a suntan and an icy cold drink is never far from reach. But a swift check-in and a charcuterie plate? That might take a little more effort.
.
This is the view down to the Isoletto Pool Club from the 19th floor of the Dorsett Gold Coast, the glitter strip's newest lodgings. Stay tuned for my review which will appear in The Australian's Travel + Luxury pages.

    • 'Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.'
.
When Kate Benfer joined the family business at Mount Cotton, outside Brisbane, she swore they wouldn't fall prey to the 'third generation curse'. That is, the notion that the first generation starts the business, the second builds it and the third ruins it. 'That wasn't going to be us,' she says.
.
This story on family businesses appeared in Company Director magazine last year. I spoke to several family business owners who generously shared their thoughts on some of the challenges and rewards. This sector is not to be underestimated: Almost three-quarters (70%) of Australian businesses are family-owned, with a collective wealth of $4.3 trillion.

    • The Australian bush is so beautiful, it takes my breath away.
.
We hiked the Ships Stern Circuit in Lamington National Park on the weekend. This is a route somewhere between 17 and 21 kilometres (estimates vary) which offers ever-changing views as it meanders from dramatic cliff tops to the deep, lush Hidden Valley. If you like chasing waterfalls, this is the hike for you. I counted 23 waterfall crossings, but this was likely a function of the recent rain (and floods) which have affected the region. Added highlights were spotting a blue spiny crayfish holding a pool party for one and two red-bellied black snakes basking in the sun.
.
If you've gathered from all this that I love hiking, you'd be wrong. For the most part, I don't like the hot, effortful, painful process of putting one foot in front of the other, over and over, for hours on end. I don't like getting sweaty or muddy or bloody or soaked or sore (all of which happened when I slipped and fell into Nixon Creek while trying to rock-hop). And I don't like trudging uphill with wet boots and soggy bamboo socks which hold water like absolutely nothing else. Even without an impromptu drenching, I puff and pant and complain so consistently by about the 6k mark that my husband reckons the fourth stage of hiking is swearing and the fifth stage of hiking is crying.
.
Then, amid all this, you turn a corner and you're immersed in a view like this - out to Wollumbin (Mount Warning) - and suddenly it's all worth it.

Lamington National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, famed for its ongoing geological processes, evolutionary history, and diversity (especially of rare, threatened and endemic species).

    • On stirring the pot.
.
Super-excited to be speaking at this year's Symposium of Australian Gastronomy about two of my favourite things - food and writing.
.
Did you know that the host city, Bendigo, was designated as Australia's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy? (No, me neither.) This title was bestowed in 2019 in recognition of the region's diverse food culture and the community's commitment to local, sustainable, delicious and creative produce.
.
And with lots of other interesting things happening in the host city of Bendigo, it's also an opportunity to indulge in another of my favourite things - travel. While I'm there, I'll be putting together several stories on what the region has to offer. Hit me up with any recommendations on where to eat, drink, shop or play.
.
And one more thing: What burning questions do you have about being a food and/or travel writer?

    • A breeze from Barcelona, some salt spray from Sorrento, and a good old-fashioned sprinkling of fairy dust seem to be the key ingredients at The Bungalow Eumundi.
.
This airy, whitewashed space is reminiscent of the Mediterranean, with a menu to match. Saganaki (not pictured) arrives drizzled with honey, sprinkled with fresh thyme and simply dressed with a wedge of lemon. Firm fleshy mussels emerge from the open kitchen swimming in a sauce studded with Noosa reds - heirloom tomatoes from a nearby farm in Doonan. Desserts run the gamut from traditional tiramisu through to coconut panna cotta with prosecco-cured pineapple, making the most of local produce. There's an inspired wine, beer and cider list, along with some rocking cocktails.
.
Set overlooking the site of the Eumundi Markets, with its row of heritage-listed fig trees, this restaurant occupies the space left by Bohemian Bungalow, which had seen several owners and was 'in desperate need of a facelift ', says co-owner Jonathan Powell. He and wife Claire honeymooned in Barcelona and chose a Spanish-born, Noosa-based designer to overhaul the interior and create its fetching La Casa look prior to its December 2021 opening.

    • How to fall in love with a camel ...
.
When I took a sunrise ride @summerlandcamels last year, I fell in love with my steed Henry, a gentle long-lashed boy, with a soft coat the colour of caramel. My story in @the.australian looks at how the world’s largest wild camel training centre and dairy emerged on an 830-acre plot at Harrisville.
.
It also explores the many other things there are to do in the Scenic Rim, which Lonely Planet rated as one of the world’s top ten regions to visit in its Best in Travel 2022 list. According to Lonely Planet, it made the cut, alongside Iceland’s Westfjords and Japan’s Shikoku, due to its national parks, ecolodges, World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests and food and wine experiences.
